Seatrium Secures Conversion Contracts for Five 600 MW-Class Floating Power Generation Vessels
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 23, Singapore-based offshore engineering group Seatrium and Turkish floating power plant operator Karpowership formally signed contracts to undertake major conversion and system integration work for five third-generation "Whale-class" floating power generation vessels. Each vessel in the series has a maximum designed power generation capacity of 600 MW, with the five vessels totaling up to 3,000 MW, all equipped with multi-fuel power generation systems compatible with hydrogen-blended fuels. Engineering design work has already commenced, and the first vessel is scheduled to enter Seatrium's Tuas Boulevard Yard in Singapore in December 2027 for conversion.

Under the contract scope, Seatrium is responsible for major conversion, equipment integration, mechanical completion, and pre-commissioning of the five vessels. The work centers on the installation and integration of power generation equipment and onboard systems, including the interfacing of multi-fuel power generation systems and onboard substation facilities. The project will advance vessel conversion in phases, beginning with engineering design and related implementation preparations, followed by the first vessel's entry into the yard for construction, and completion of equipment integration, mechanical system inspections, and pre-commissioning preparations.
The "Whale-class" is currently the floating power station vessel type with the highest planned power generation capacity in Karpowership's fleet. The vessels feature a modular power supply design, equipped with multi-fuel power generation equipment and onboard substations, enabling connection to local power grids through onshore substation facilities. Their fuel systems are designed to be compatible with conventional fuels, natural gas, and hydrogen-blended fuels, with power generation, voltage step-up, and external transmission accomplished through the onboard electrical system. According to Karpowership's deployment plan, floating power generation vessels can begin supplying power within as little as 30 days of arriving at the deployment site, provided the necessary grid connection conditions are met.
Seatrium's Tuas Boulevard Yard, where the first vessel is planned to be stationed, will undertake the first batch of major conversion work for this series of vessels. This also marks Seatrium's first undertaking of major conversion and integration work for "Whale-class" floating power generation vessels. The contract follows a letter of intent signed by both parties in August 2025, which proposed cooperation covering the conversion of three floating storage and regasification units and the system integration of up to six next-generation floating power generation vessels. The formal signing now brings five of these power generation vessels into the confirmed scope of engineering implementation.
The two parties have been cooperating since 2018. Seatrium has previously completed conversion work for seven floating storage and regasification units for Karpowership and secured conversion orders for the eighth and ninth vessels of the same type in 2026. The newly signed power generation vessel contract extends the collaboration from natural gas receiving and processing equipment conversion to power generation system integration for large floating power stations.
