New York to Develop Zero-Emission Advanced Nuclear Plant

Wedoany.com Report-Jun 25, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Tuesday a directive for the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to plan a zero-emission advanced nuclear power plant in Upstate New York. This step supports the state’s commitment to a reliable, affordable electric grid and a clean energy economy.

The advanced nuclear power plant in Upstate New York will enhance clean energy in the region.

Outlined in Hochul’s 2025 State of the State address, the initiative focuses on expanding nuclear energy to address growing electricity demand driven by economic growth, electrification, and the phasing out of fossil fuel plants. The nuclear facility will deliver steady, zero-emission power, complementing New York’s renewable energy goals.

The NYPA, alongside the Department of Public Service (DPS), will explore developing a nuclear plant with at least one gigawatt of capacity, potentially with private sector collaboration. The project aims to support the state’s grid, residents, and businesses. The NYPA’s evaluation will cover technology, business models, and site selection, prioritizing safety, community support, infrastructure, workforce, and land availability.

Hochul stated: “As New York State electrifies its economy, deactivates ageing fossil fuel power generation and continues to attract large manufacturers that create good-paying jobs, we must embrace an energy policy of abundance that centres on energy independence and supply chain security to ensure New York controls its energy future.”

In partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and DPS, the NYPA is developing the Responsible Advanced Nuclear Development master plan. The state is supporting Constellation with funding for early site permitting at the Nine Mile Point Clean Energy Center and exploring regional cooperation with other states and Ontario to enhance nuclear supply chains and advance technology.
