en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 15, the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) announced the next phase of capital deployment under its CAD 6 billion defense platform, allocating CAD 1 billion for defense and dual-use technology investments. Of this, CAD 500 million will be directed through the newly established Defence Fund into venture capital, growth equity, and private equity funds in Canada and allied countries, while an additional CAD 200 million will be added to the StrongNorth fund, expanding it from CAD 300 million to CAD 500 million. Quantum technology has been identified as one of the key investment areas in this round of capital deployment.

The Defence Fund primarily adopts an indirect investment approach, focusing on supporting funds with significant business exposure in Canada that invest in defense and dual-use technologies. BDC explicitly lists technology areas including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, aerospace, advanced materials, quantum technology, and energy systems. The fund's first investment has been directed to Intrepid Growth Partners' inaugural fund, which has a fund size of USD 525 million and covers high-growth AI companies across Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Europe.

StrongNorth, by contrast, adopts a direct equity investment model, targeting early-stage Canadian deep tech companies, with key coverage in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, cybersecurity, secure communications, aerospace, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance, advanced materials, and energy technology. Following this additional CAD 200 million, StrongNorth's total size has reached CAD 500 million.

StrongNorth had previously begun allocating capital to quantum and quantum security-related companies. In May, BDC invested through this fund in Canadian photonic quantum company Photonic and participated in a CAD 16 million financing round for quantum-resistant identity security company Lastwall. BDC incorporates both types of investments into Canada's defense and critical infrastructure technology framework.

The BDC defense platform was initially launched in December 2025 with a scale of up to CAD 4 billion, and was further expanded to CAD 6 billion in March 2026. The platform supports Canadian defense and dual-use companies through various means including financing, direct investment, fund investment, and advisory services. As of March 2026, BDC has provided CAD 91.7 million in financing to 16 companies through this platform.

This round of CAD 1 billion is part of the capital deployment arrangement under the CAD 6 billion defense platform. The specific allocations formally announced by BDC this time include CAD 500 million for the Defence Fund and an additional CAD 200 million for StrongNorth; its official announcement did not further break down the specific investment instruments and individual amounts for the remaining capital within the CAD 1 billion.
