Barhale Wins £14.6 Million UK Sewage Pipeline Contract

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 24, Anglian Water appointed Barhale to deliver the Alconbury Weald sewage pipeline project in Cambridgeshire, with a contract value of £14.6 million. The project will build a new twin-line pressurized sewage main with a total length of 7,460 meters. Barhale will act as the main contractor and deliver the works through the @one Alliance. The project is scheduled for handover in November 2027.

The pipeline will extend from Alconbury Weald toward the east side of Huntingdon and ultimately connect to the inlet system of the Huntingdon Water Recycling Centre. The twin pipeline uses three diameters: 400 mm, 315 mm, and 250 mm. About 1.5 km lies within the Alconbury Weald development area, while the remaining route mainly crosses agricultural land. The project has a design conveyance capacity of 3,840 cubic meters per day and a design flow rate of 144 liters per second.

Most sections of the works will use open-cut construction, with 10 horizontal directional drilling crossings. Beneath the East Coast Main Line railway, two 355-meter-long, 630 mm diameter casings will be installed, with 400 mm main pipes then inserted. At the River Great Ouse crossing, two 292-meter-long, 400 mm diameter casings will be used, with 250 mm pipes installed inside.

The existing sewage pumping station capacity at Alconbury Weald can no longer meet the needs of subsequent development, and the developer Urban&Civic will build a new terminal pumping station as a supporting facility. The development area is located on the former RAF Alconbury site and is planned to include about 6,200 homes and up to 190,000 square meters of employment and commercial space. The new sewage main will provide sewage export capacity for subsequent residential and commercial projects.

The River Great Ouse construction section will also use road mats and Bailey bridges to cross drainage ditches and avoid archaeologically sensitive ridge-and-furrow remains along the route. Barhale also plans to trial Wacker Neuson off-road transporters with a replaceable body system within the approximately 7.5 km construction corridor for transporting pipes and construction materials.
