Phase One of Gikomba Market in Nairobi, Kenya Enters Final Stage, Scheduled for Completion on October 15

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 27, the Phase One construction of the Gikomba Modern Market in Nairobi, Kenya entered the final construction stage, with the site having shifted to plastering, painting, shop partitioning, and outdoor works. Phase One of the project is scheduled to be completed before October 15, and the first batch of approximately 5,000 traders who had previously relocated due to the renovation will gradually move into the new market to conduct business.

The Gikomba Market renovation adopts a phased construction approach. In August this year, the Phase One main structure had completed three multi-story commercial buildings, with roofing and interior installation underway at that time; as of September, the focus of on-site construction had shifted from the main structure to interior finishing and pre-use preparations. The market management had previously disclosed that each construction phase is expected to last approximately 4 to 5 months, and subsequent phases will continue to accommodate traders in different business categories such as second-hand clothing, vegetables, and grains.

The supporting plans for the new market include commercial stalls, elevators, parking facilities, police facilities, and a fire protection system. The construction team is currently partitioning stalls and functional spaces within the buildings, while continuing to complete the exterior facade and outdoor works to prepare the Phase One buildings for handover and use.

The entire Gikomba Market modernization project involves an investment of approximately 5 billion Kenyan shillings and is jointly advanced by the Kenyan central government and the Nairobi County Government. When disclosed in August this year, the overall completion of Phase One had exceeded 70%; on September 11, the Gikomba Quarry Road market project reached 96% completion, indicating that multiple market facilities in the Gikomba area have entered the late stage of concentrated construction.

In addition to Phase One entering the final stage, site preparation for Phase Two of the Gikomba Market has also begun. Information disclosed on September 22 shows that Phase Two has started site clearance, earthworks excavation, and the mobilization of construction machinery, with foundation construction and main structure works to follow.
