Wales Restarts Planning for Third Menai Strait Bridge
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 6, the Welsh Government announced two transport infrastructure plans, deciding to restart preliminary development work for a third Menai Strait crossing and to launch an 18-month study of road improvement options for the M4 motorway around Newport. Deputy Minister for Transport Mark Hooper announced the arrangements in the Senedd. The third Menai crossing will undergo engineering design, environmental assessment, business case development, and statutory approval work, while the preferred road option for the M4 will be determined after the study is completed. Neither project has yet entered the construction phase.

The Menai Strait connects mainland Wales with the Isle of Anglesey, and the existing crossings include the Menai Suspension Bridge and the Britannia Bridge. A capacity and operational reliability review conducted by the Welsh Government confirmed that when the existing bridges are restricted due to maintenance, severe weather, or other reasons, road transport between the island and North Wales is affected. The government has decided to resume development of a third crossing while continuing to invest in the management, maintenance, and operation of the existing bridges.
Targeted operational improvements will be implemented on the Britannia Bridge, including the installation of wind shielding, the introduction of variable speed limit management, and other traffic operation adjustments. During the review, a three-lane tidal traffic management scheme for the bridge was studied, but due to safety and operational issues, the government decided not to proceed with the scheme. The final route, bridge type, construction funding, and construction timeline for the third crossing remain to be determined through subsequent studies and approvals.
A separate road infrastructure options study will be conducted for the M4 motorway around Newport, with a study period of 18 months, after which a preferred option will be selected. The Welsh Government has also identified a set of short-term transport improvements to be implemented over the next five years, including renewal and maintenance of existing motorway and strategic road infrastructure, local improvements to roads and junctions around Newport, and optimization of the motorway traffic management system.
Regarding freight transport organization, the government plans to study ways to increase the use of alternative routes such as the A465 and to adjust the operating arrangements for freight routes around Newport. Rail and public transport improvement projects include accelerating the construction of Cardiff Parkway and Magor and Undy stations, improving access at Severn Tunnel Junction station, and enhancing bus connections between Newport and Cardiff. The government proposes that the above measures will reduce peak-hour road traffic by up to approximately 10%, a figure that represents a policy target.
