Brazil's Mining M&A Transaction Value Reaches US$5.9 Billion in 2026

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 9, consulting firm AlixPartners released statistics showing that as of October 2, the disclosed value of critical minerals-related mining M&A transactions in Brazil in 2026 reached approximately US$5.9 billion, 2.6 times the US$2.3 billion for all of 2025. From the beginning of 2025 to early October 2026, the cumulative value of related M&A transactions totaled approximately US$8.2 billion, of which rare earth projects accounted for 42%.

From the beginning of 2025 to October 2, 2026, AlixPartners tracked 13 mining M&A transactions with publicly disclosed transaction values, as well as more than ten transactions that were smaller in scale or had undisclosed values. Among them, 8 completed transactions totaled US$4.6 billion, while the other 5 transactions, valued at US$3.6 billion, are still awaiting closing or relevant approvals.

Major transactions in the rare earth sector include US Rare Earths' acquisition of Brazil's Serra Verde Mining Company at a valuation of approximately US$2.8 billion, and Australia's Lynas Rare Earths' acquisition of the Caldeira rare earth project in Minas Gerais state for approximately US$672 million. Serra Verde's Pela Ema rare earth mine and processing facilities are located in the Minaçu area of Goiás state, and the Caldeira project is located in the Caldas area of Minas Gerais state.

Critical minerals transactions involving Chinese companies as buyers accounted for 30% of the statistical amount, covering mineral products such as nickel, aluminum, and gold. Relevant companies include China Molybdenum, subsidiaries of Aluminum Corporation of China, MMG, Baiyin Nonferrous, and China Nonferrous Mining Group.

In terms of financing, from July 2025 to October 2026, junior mining companies in Brazil's critical minerals sector raised a cumulative total of approximately US$600 million through securities issuance and direct equity financing on overseas capital markets including Canada and Australia. Some of the projects covered in the statistics are still in the pre-production stage, advancing environmental licensing, mineral resource reserve certification, and plant construction financing.
