en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 21, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a joint investment package totaling approximately CAD 8.7 billion, focusing on upgrading steel manufacturing facilities, retrofitting automotive production lines, and building road infrastructure in the "Ring of Fire" critical minerals development area in northern Ontario. Of this, the steel industry receives CAD 5.22 billion, the automotive manufacturing sector receives CAD 2.5 billion, and the federal government has separately committed up to CAD 1 billion over three years for mining access road projects.Doug Ford and Mark Carney

Steel industry funding will be provided through the newly established joint federal-Ontario Steel Action Fund, with an implementation period of five years. The Government of Canada contributes CAD 3.55 billion and the Government of Ontario contributes CAD 1.67 billion. The funds will support steel enterprises in renewing production equipment, adjusting product mix, and expanding steel production for defense, advanced manufacturing, energy, and transportation infrastructure. Some of the support will be delivered through existing industrial support mechanisms.

The automotive manufacturing sector will receive an additional CAD 2.5 billion in capital investment support over the next two years, with CAD 1.5 billion from the federal government and CAD 1 billion from the Government of Ontario. The funding targets large-scale automotive manufacturing projects, covering the procurement of modern machinery and equipment, upgrading of existing production lines, and retrofitting of electric vehicle manufacturing facilities. The Government of Canada has also decided to maintain the new light-duty vehicle greenhouse gas emission standards at the 2026 level through the 2029 model year, with annual tightening to resume from the 2030 model year.

Mining infrastructure investment is concentrated in the "Ring of Fire" mineral resource area in northern Ontario. The federal government plans to invest up to CAD 1 billion over three years, matching the up to CAD 1 billion in road construction funding previously committed by Ontario. The two parties will also establish a joint approval coordination mechanism to advance mining access roads and other critical infrastructure construction, and to screen priority projects eligible for dedicated critical minerals financing. Related coordination work involves mineral resource development, road transportation facilities, and Indigenous community participation.
