en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 30, DP World completed the expansion of the container terminal at the deepwater port of Posorja, Ecuador, extending the berth line from 467.5 meters to 800 meters, raising annual throughput capacity to 1.4 million TEUs, with a private investment plan of approximately USD 200 million. This expansion adds 100 meters to the 700-meter berth that entered service in April 2026, reaching the final design length.

The newly added equipment has arrived at the terminal but has not yet been put into operation. A new ship-to-shore crane with a 72-meter outreach and a 65-tonne lifting capacity, powered entirely by electricity, can serve ultra-large container vessels 400 meters long carrying 20,000 to 24,000 TEUs; its outreach exceeds the 68 meters of the two ship-to-shore cranes commissioned in April 2026. Three hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes, introduced at Posorja for the first time, have been delivered and are undergoing commissioning, with operation expected in early 2027. Once all equipment is in service, the terminal will have 7 ship-to-shore cranes and 18 yard cranes. By recovering energy when loads are lowered, the hybrid yard cranes cut diesel consumption by approximately 40% compared with conventional equipment and are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 900 tonnes per year.

Supporting equipment has been supplemented in tandem. The terminal has received electric internal tractors and empty-container reach stackers, and refrigerated container plug points have increased by approximately 50%. These configurations correspond to Posorja's operational needs as Ecuador's gateway for agricultural and reefer cargo exports.

The investment figure has been adjusted from USD 190 million in April 2026 to approximately USD 200 million. Posorja is being developed under a 50-year concession obtained by DP World in 2016, and cumulative investment since operations began in 2019 totals approximately USD 700 million.
