Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 12, Mitsubishi Power has completed a significant hydrogen fuel conversion project at the Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC) refinery in Egypt. This marks the first industrial use of hydrogen as a fuel in an industrial boiler, not only in Egypt but also in the MENA region.
The company secured the contract in 2022 to upgrade a 100-tonne-per-hour main boiler, converting it from heavy fuel oil and natural gas to 100% hydrogen fuel. This innovative project also utilizes 14,000 tonnes of hydrogen-rich gases produced in the refinery’s production units, reducing the consumption of natural gas by approximately 24,000 tonnes annually.
Javier Cavada, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Power for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, commented: “This project will lay down the foundation for a commercial path to decarbonize Egypt’s industrial facilities with minimal downtime, while demonstrating the tangible impact of hydrogen in reducing emissions and developing sustainable energy solutions.”
In a LinkedIn post, Cavada emphasized the significance of the project: “A first for Egypt, a first for the World, a bold and ambitious step towards delivering the energy transition, and a proud moment for Mitsubishi Power! Through technology, engineering, and innovation, our partner ANRPC Petroleum will deliver energy to the country using 40% less energy and reducing carbon emissions by approximately 65,000 tons per year.”
Sayed Al-Rawi, chairman and managing director of ANRPC, also shared his thoughts on the partnership: “By integrating hydrogen into refining processes, we are helping reduce Egypt’s carbon footprint and setting a new standard for the country’s industrial sector. We are proud of our partnership with Mitsubishi Power on this project, which demonstrates how international partnerships and advanced technology can drive fundamental change towards a sustainable energy future.”
This successful project underscores the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source for large-scale industrial applications and sets a precedent for future hydrogen-based projects in the region. The partnership between Mitsubishi Power and ANRPC is a key step toward Egypt's broader energy transition goals and serves as an example of how technological innovation can contribute to sustainable development.
