Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 20, PetroChina Coalbed Methane Co., Ltd. announced that the Daning-Jixian block in Shanxi Province, China’s first large-scale coalbed methane field, has reached a daily production capacity exceeding 8 million cubic meters, with an annual output potential of 3 billion cubic meters. This achievement marks a significant advancement in the country’s unconventional natural gas development.

Situated on the eastern edge of the Ordos Basin, the Daning-Jixian block is a national demonstration project for deep coalbed methane extraction, with estimated reserves of 600 billion cubic meters. Construction began in 2019, and the field has since leveraged technological innovations to boost output. In the first seven months of this year, the block produced over 1.2 billion cubic meters of coalbed methane, a 50% increase compared to the same period last year.

“This milestone underscores our commitment to advancing clean energy solutions,” a PetroChina Coalbed Methane Co., Ltd. spokesperson stated. Coalbed methane, recognized as a clean and strategic energy resource, supports reduced mining risks, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and alleviation of gas supply shortages. The field’s development aligns with efforts to enhance sustainable energy production.

Shanxi Province is a key region for coalbed methane, holding approximately 8.31 trillion cubic meters of resources at depths below 2,000 meters, accounting for nearly one-third of China’s total reserves. The Daning-Jixian block’s success highlights the region’s potential to contribute significantly to the national energy mix through innovative extraction techniques.

The project’s progress reflects ongoing investments in technology to optimize resource extraction. By increasing production efficiency, the Daning-Jixian block supports China’s broader goals of energy security and environmental sustainability. “Our focus on technological advancements enables us to unlock the potential of unconventional gas resources,” a company representative noted.
