Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 20, Petrobras, Brazil’s state-owned oil company, announced that the floating production, storage, and offloading vessel (FPSO) Almirante Tamandare, operating in the Buzios field in the Santos Basin, has reached a production capacity of 225,000 barrels per day (bpd). This milestone, achieved recently, marks the highest output for a single platform in Petrobras’ history, as stated in an online release.

FPSO Almirante Tamandare has reached its capacity of 225,000 bpd.

“The record confirms expectations that the field will soon become Petrobras’ largest in production,” the company noted. The Buzios field, discovered in 2010, ranks as Brazil’s second-largest producing field, trailing only the Tupi Field. Its vast scale, comparable to twice the size of Guanabara Bay, supports the deployment of high-capacity production units. Petrobras anticipates the field will exceed 1.5 million bpd by 2030, with five additional platforms under construction.

The FPSO Almirante Tamandare, leased from SBM Offshore, began production in February for the Buzios 7 project, which includes eight wells, five of which contributed to the 225,000 bpd milestone. The vessel can process 12 million cubic meters of natural gas daily and store 1.4 million barrels of crude, incorporating technologies like closed flare systems and heat recovery to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

“Another important factor, besides the volume, is the quality of the oil from the Buzios field, which has substantial reserves of light oil,” said Sylvia Anjos, Petrobras’ exploration and production director. In a separate statement, Petrobras president Magda Chambriard highlighted the field’s recent achievements: “In the first half of this year we brought more wells into production than in the whole of last year, among them wells from Buzios with remarkable results that allowed us to reach yet another record, surpassing the mark of 900,000 bpd.”

Petrobras also reported a new discovery in February in the western Buzios field. Well 9-BUZ-99D-RJS, drilled at a water depth of 1,940 meters, 189 kilometers off Rio de Janeiro’s coast, confirmed oil reservoirs at 5,600 meters. “Tests conducted from a depth of 5,600 meters confirmed the presence of oil reservoirs through electrical profiles, which will later be characterized through laboratory analyses,” Petrobras stated, affirming the field’s pre-salt potential.

Operated by Petrobras with an 88.99% stake, the Buzios field includes partners CNOOC Petroleum Brasil Ltda. (7.34%) and CNODC Brasil Petroleo e Gas Ltda. (3.67%). The project supports Brazil’s energy sector growth through sustainable production practices.
