He highlighted that the project is now fully managed by the municipality following the departure of former partner Silenos Energy earlier this year. This shift enables Gräfelfing to oversee financing and future heat pricing directly, ensuring affordability for residents.

The initiative is led by Gräfelfing’s municipal subsidiaries, with managing director Thomas Banck and technical director Markus Schmelz at the helm. The team is focused on delivering cost-effective heating while minimizing environmental and community impacts during drilling and construction of the heating plant. The project is being developed on an 18,000 m² site, with drilling set to commence in the second quarter of 2026. Two wells, reaching depths of approximately 2,900 meters, are planned, with drilling and testing expected to take up to a year. If successful, the system will supply geothermal heat to local households by late 2028 or early 2029.

“We are committed to providing reliable and sustainable heating solutions while maintaining minimal disruption to our community,” said Thomas Banck. The project benefits from federal funding through the BEW program for efficient heating networks, supplemented by municipal loans and capital.

Exploration of geothermal resources in Gräfelfing began in 2009 with seismic surveys led by private developer Baldur Trinkl. After his withdrawal, the municipality took full control, leading to this significant milestone. With anticipated water temperatures of 90-95°C, the project has the potential to serve as a model for community-led geothermal development in Bavaria’s Molasse Basin, contributing to regional sustainability goals.
