Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 3, A ceremony was held in Turkmenistan’s Balkan region to mark the start of construction on a new urea production plant by the state concern Türkmenhimiýa. The facility is designed to produce 1,155,000 tons of mineral fertilizers annually, aiming to strengthen both domestic supply and export capacity. The project will be implemented through a partnership between Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation and Türkiye’s Gap İnşaat.

During the event, speakers emphasized that urea is a key export product that will also help reduce reliance on imported mineral fertilizers. The western Balkan region was selected for the plant due to its proximity to natural gas fields along the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea, which provides the essential raw material for the gas chemical industry.

The new facility is expected to generate social and economic benefits for the region. Once operational, it will create employment opportunities and contribute to improving local living standards, supporting the broader development objectives of the area.

Turkmenistan already hosts three major urea production facilities managed by Türkmenhimiýa. The Garabogaz plant has an annual output capacity of approximately 1.16 million tons, while additional facilities are located in Mary and in the Lebap region, near Turkmenabat. Together, these plants form the backbone of the country’s chemical sector, producing fertilizers for both domestic consumption and international markets.

By expanding urea production through the new Balkan plant, Turkmenistan aims to strengthen its position as a significant fertilizer producer in the region. The facility will leverage local resources efficiently, including natural gas, to enhance production sustainability and reduce import dependence.

The partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation and Gap İnşaat combines international expertise and local knowledge, ensuring high technical standards and efficient project delivery. The plant’s construction reflects Turkmenistan’s commitment to developing its chemical industry and supporting agricultural productivity through reliable access to mineral fertilizers.

Overall, the Balkan urea project represents a major step in Turkmenistan’s strategy to expand fertilizer production, boost exports, and improve regional socio-economic development while supporting the country’s broader industrial and agricultural goals.
