Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 4, Evonik, a specialty chemicals company headquartered in Essen, Germany, announced the successful trial production of its second polyamides reactor at the company’s Shanghai site. This milestone marks a major step toward doubling Evonik’s long-chain polyamides production capacity in Asia and reinforces its position as a leading supplier of high-performance polyamides.
Elaine Wu, Senior Vice President and Head of Evonik’s Advanced Technologies Segment in Asia Pacific, said: “The second polyamides reactor project marks a significant step in expanding our high-performance polyamides capacity in China. This investment reflects our confidence in the Chinese market and will enable us to better meet the growing demand for high-performance polymers from local customers, reinforcing our position as a key partner in industries such as automotive and consumer goods.”
High-performance polyamides are essential materials used in advanced and lightweight automotive components, thermal management systems in new energy vehicles, energy storage applications, and high-end consumer products. Their strength, heat resistance, and durability make them suitable for demanding industrial and technological uses.
The new reactor is part of Evonik’s strategy to strengthen its production base in China and enhance supply chain stability in the Asia-Pacific region. The company stated that the expansion will also increase the local output of advanced materials such as AABB polyamides and PEBA (polyether block amides) elastomers. These materials are commonly applied in automotive tubing, monofilaments, and the midsoles and outsoles of performance footwear. As market demand continues to rise, applications in electric vehicles, sports equipment, and consumer goods are expected to grow further in the coming years.
Dr. Jan-Olaf Barth, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Evonik’s High-Performance Polymers business line, noted: “This latest investment is based on our expectation of attractive growth in demand for long-chain polyamides, driven by multiple applications. The new production capacity will greatly enhance the resilience of our global supply chain, allowing us to respond more quickly and flexibly to customer needs in the Asia-Pacific region and provide them with superior and innovative solutions.”
With this expansion, Evonik continues to invest in sustainable growth within China’s industrial sector. The enhanced production capacity is expected to support local industries by improving access to advanced polymer materials, fostering innovation, and reducing reliance on external supply chains.
The Shanghai facility’s expanded operations will play a central role in meeting regional demand for high-performance polymers, particularly in sectors undergoing transformation such as automotive, mobility, and consumer technology. Evonik emphasized that the project reflects both its long-term commitment to China and its dedication to providing cutting-edge materials for next-generation applications.
By completing this successful trial phase, Evonik is now positioned to commence full-scale production, ensuring greater supply reliability and flexibility across its Asian markets. The company views this development as a key step toward strengthening its global leadership in specialty materials and maintaining strong partnerships with customers throughout the region.
