Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 23, Construction and engineering firm Costain Group has secured a £75 million contract with EDF, the operator of nuclear power stations, to provide project controls services across EDF’s eight nuclear plants in the UK. The five-year framework agreement extends the existing partnership between Costain and EDF, which began in 2017.

Under this contract, Costain will oversee the management of projects at EDF’s operational nuclear sites, including Hartlepool, Heysham, Hinkley Point B, and Torness. Additionally, Costain is supporting the construction of the Sizewell C reactor and contributing to the ongoing development of the Hinkley Point C reactor.

EDF, a French state-owned company, generates around 15% of the UK’s electricity. In addition to its nuclear assets, EDF is also advancing the construction of the Sizewell C power station, in which it holds a 12.5% stake.

Costain’s chief executive, Alex Vaughan, commented on the agreement, highlighting that it is a result of the company’s successful strategy of fostering long-term, trusted partnerships with key infrastructure asset owners. Vaughan emphasized, “By ensuring the safety and efficiency of civil nuclear energy operations and decommissioning activities, we’re helping to create a sustainable future that delivers local and national economic prosperity.”

Alongside its nuclear projects, Costain is also increasing its involvement in energy transition sectors such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen, and energy storage. The company is contributing to the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) CCS project in Teesside and the Humber, alongside Aberdeen’s Wood Group. Costain is also involved in the Marram Energy Storage Hub (MESH) project in the East Irish Sea and the Keuper Gas Storage Project in Cheshire, working with Storengy.

In addition, earlier this year, Costain secured a contract with the Ineos Forties Pipeline System to optimize operations at the Kinneil oil terminal near Grangemouth.

Meanwhile, EDF continues to invest in green hydrogen projects, focusing on developments in Teesside and at the Fawley oil refinery.

This contract further strengthens the relationship between Costain and EDF and positions Costain as a key player in the UK's nuclear and energy transition sectors.
