Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 26, Nokia has completed a major upgrade of RailTel's nationwide Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) National Long-Distance network in India, working together with its authorised partners.
The project included deployment of Carrier-Grade NAT (CG-NAT), Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) functionality, and an advanced metro optical transport network. These improvements meet rising demand for high-speed, reliable connectivity while enhancing operational efficiency and lowering costs.
Using Nokia's 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform and latest transponder technology, the upgraded network significantly increases transmission capacity. It achieves a lower cost per bit by maximising the use of RailTel's existing fibre infrastructure and previously unused spectrum channels. The solution also introduces high-capacity Lambda services and express traffic lanes between major cities.
The implementation follows an open, vendor-neutral architecture that supports future innovation across RailTel's optical network.
Nokia's 7750 Service Router series, incorporating integrated BNG and CG-NAT capabilities, enables RailTel to handle growing enterprise and broadband traffic on a single, resilient platform, improving inter-city connectivity and overall network performance.
"This collaboration represents a pivotal step in modernizing our BNG, CG-NAT and optical transport systems. Through the integration of Nokia's advanced technologies with our existing infrastructure, we are positioned to achieve exceptional efficiency. These enhancements will enable us to deliver superior, faster, and more reliable services to our enterprise & Broadband customers across India," said Sanjai Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of RailTel.
Prashant Malkani, Head of Sales, Network Infrastructure, India at Nokia, added: "At a time where demand for high-speed, resilient network services is constantly increasing, RailTel has put its trust in Nokia to ensure its critical network modernization project is successful. We have unmatched credentials in supporting open network architectures which integrate into any customer ecosystem, and the use of our latest set of IP routers and optical transponders will help RailTel to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency."
The completed upgrade strengthens RailTel’s ability to provide high-quality connectivity services nationwide, supporting both enterprise requirements and expanding broadband access across India.
