Wedoany.com Report-Dec.24, Borealis Group, based in Vienna, Austria, has entered into a strategic partnership with BlueAlp, a chemical recycling technology provider headquartered in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

As part of the agreement, Borealis will transfer its majority ownership in Renasci, a chemical recycling company located in Ostend, Belgium, to BlueAlp. In return, Borealis will obtain a 10% stake in BlueAlp to aid its continued expansion and scaling efforts. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Renasci operates a 20,000-ton-per-year scale-up facility that employs BlueAlp's licensed technology. BlueAlp designed, built, and provided operational support for the plant over recent years. This partnership allows BlueAlp to transition from a support role to full operational responsibility, marking a logical progression in its development.

The shift is anticipated to speed up technological improvements, create a strong foundation for producing high-quality circular feedstock, and reinforce BlueAlp's position in technology licensing.

Since its initial involvement with Renasci, Borealis has directed its progress, helping establish it as one of the few active chemical recycling plants in Europe. Under the new arrangement, BlueAlp will take the lead on future development and enhancements at the facility, while Borealis concentrates on developing customer solutions utilizing chemically recycled feedstock.

"Borealis' direct support comes at a pivotal moment in the chemical recycling industry, where rapid expansion of capacity is needed to achieve recycled content targets. Their market experience and materials expertise will support our growth and position us well to turn more plastic waste into high-quality circular feedstock," says Valentijn de Neve, BlueAlp CEO.

The collaboration equips Borealis, BlueAlp, and their value-chain partners to meet expected requirements under the European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), scheduled for 2030. This regulation is projected to boost demand for recycled materials suitable for sensitive applications, such as food and cosmetics packaging, particularly those produced through chemical recycling.

"The deepening of the partnership with BlueAlp, combining assets and technology, will accelerate progress in chemical recycling for the industry," says Stefan Doboczky, Borealis CEO. "It will allow Borealis to accelerate serving our customer base with an ever-broadening range of polymers based on chemically recycled feedstock. This transaction is fully in line with Borealis We4Customers Strategy, helping customers to deliver on their sustainability ambitions, whilst strengthening the innovation and operational focus of the group."

This partnership integrates complementary strengths in technology, operations, and market knowledge to advance circular economy solutions. It supports the production of sustainable feedstock and contributes to broader efforts in resource-efficient material management across the plastics value chain.
