Alfa Laval Secures Order for 60 Heat Exchangers for Onuba H2 Project
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 2, Alfa Laval was selected as the supplier of cooling equipment for the electrolysis system of the Onuba H2 project in Spain, and will deliver 60 heat exchangers to Moeve, covering electrolyzer cooling, gas cooling, and Balance of Plant auxiliary system cooling. Phase 1 of Onuba, located at La Rábida Energy Park in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, has confirmed the construction of a 300 MW alkaline water electrolysis system.

The Phase 1 electrolysis system for Onuba is supplied by thyssenkrupp nucera, with the contract scope covering engineering, procurement, manufacturing, and equipment supply, comprising 15 standardized 20 MW alkaline water electrolysis units with a total capacity of 300 MW. Moeve completed the final investment decision for the project in March 2026, after which the project entered the equipment procurement and construction implementation phase. Alfa Laval's current order for 60 heat exchangers falls within the ancillary equipment procurement chain for this 300 MW electrolysis system.
According to Moeve's latest project plan, the initial electrolysis capacity of Onuba is 300 MW, with an additional 105 MW expansion option reserved. The implementation of the additional capacity is subject to grid connection availability and subsequent board approval. The 300 MW Phase 1 is designed to produce approximately 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year. The overall project investment exceeds €1 billion, covering not only the green hydrogen production facility but also related infrastructure and a photovoltaic power plant for self-consumption. Moeve holds a 51% majority interest in the project company, with partners such as Masdar and Enalter holding minority interests.
The project has previously received approximately €304 million in support from the Spanish government, with funding sourced from the Hydrogen Valley program under the EU's NextGenerationEU initiative, corresponding to a 405 MW development scale for the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley. Onuba has also been included by the EU in the list of Projects of Common Interest. In its earlier project design, Moeve treated 405 MW as the full Phase 1 scale, of which 300 MW has now received the investment decision and entered equipment procurement, while the remaining 105 MW remains conditional on grid capacity and subsequent approvals.
The renewable hydrogen produced at Onuba is planned for use in Moeve's own industrial facilities and by third-party users, as well as for the production of renewable fuels for aviation, road transport, and maritime shipping, while also covering part of the demand from the chemical and fertilizer production sectors. Alfa Laval's order does not disclose the contract value, specific heat exchanger models, individual heat transfer area, material grades, or equipment delivery batches. At this stage, the project implementation chain has been clearly defined as follows: FID was completed in March 2026, thyssenkrupp nucera secured the contract for the 300 MW electrolyzer equipment, Alfa Laval subsequently obtained the supporting order for 60 heat exchangers, and the project continues into the equipment manufacturing and construction phase.
