Built in 1976, the plant has a production history spanning over 40 years, with core products including pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane (TMP), sodium formate, formaldehyde, and SMF concrete admixtures.

Perstorp is the world's largest TMP producer, and the Toledo plant wasthe only TMP and pentaerythritol production facility in the United States. This shutdown means that domestic US TMP and pentaerythritol production capacity has been reduced to zero.

The decision to close the plant stems from Perstorp's comprehensive assessment of its global manufacturing footprint, aimed at concentrating production in fewer, more strategically located facilities to enhance the efficiency of its manufacturing network. In terms of industry context, the global polyols supply chain is facing structural overcapacity challenges, with market supply-demand imbalances leading to persistently declining industry-wide operating rates and product prices, significantly compressing corporate profit margins.

The shutdown affects approximately 70% of Perstorp's US-based employees. Perstorp has stated that it will support affected employees through a smooth transition.

Perstorp has clearly stated that this adjustment pertains solely to production operations, and that its sales, customer service, production planning, warehousing, and distribution systems in the US region will be fully retained. Demand for polyol products from North American and global customers will be fulfilled by Perstorp's other production sites worldwide, with the North American market remaining a core strategic market. Perstorp will continue to retain its Freeport, Texas facility in the US.
