On January 19, 2026, Antamina, a major Peruvian copper and zinc producer, announced the successful deployment of a Komatsu P&H 4800XPC excavator, making it the first and currently only mine in Peru operating the world's largest excavator. This move aims to enhance its production capacity and operational safety standards.

According to the company, this Komatsu excavator has a single bucket load capacity of up to 135 tons, an increase of 30 to 35 tons compared to the mine's existing equipment. With this capability, loading an ultra-large truck requires only 3 bucket loads, compared to 4 previously, significantly optimizing the loading cycle. The assembly process of the equipment took approximately 90 days and was completed with zero workplace injuries. The company plans to deploy a second and third unit of the same model in October 2026 and 2027, respectively.

The Vice President of Operations at Antamina stated that this is a milestone for the company and the Peruvian mining industry, reflecting a commitment to innovation and safety. The excavator is equipped with an advanced control system and an ergonomic cabin to improve operational precision and safety.
