The "Emergency Lane Opening During Peak Hours" measure implemented on some national highways in Malaysia has shown positive results. According to official safety assessment data, this initiative has effectively reduced traffic accident rates at multiple pilot sections. The reduction in accident incidence reached 22% in some areas, and exceeded 74% on certain road segments.
Malaysian Minister of Works Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that the temporary opening of emergency lanes to light vehicles during peak hours and holiday periods has effectively alleviated traffic congestion without significantly impacting road safety, and the overall accident rate has remained at a relatively low level.
To ensure the orderly implementation of this measure, traffic management authorities continuously monitor road conditions through surveillance systems and strengthen collaboration with relevant agencies, particularly enhancing supervision during peak travel periods to prevent improper occupation of emergency lanes.
As part of a long-term traffic management strategy, the Malaysian government will continue to advance the upgrading of highway infrastructure, including gradually implementing road widening projects and optimizing traffic management systems, with the aim of further improving the traffic efficiency and safety of major highways during peak traffic flow periods.
