Wedoany.com Report on Feb 25th, Fortis Renewable Energy BV has signed a mandate letter with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development regarding potential financing for a 270 MWp solar photovoltaic power plant in Serbia, which will be equipped with a 72 MWh battery energy storage system. This agreement initiates the structured financing process and opens the due diligence required for long-term debt provision.
The Sremska Mitrovica project is expected to become Serbia's largest solar photovoltaic facility and one of the leading ones in the Western Balkans. This project represents a key advancement aimed at enhancing Serbia's energy security, supporting decarbonization goals, and accelerating integration with European climate and energy policies.
Fortis stated that the project will add significant renewable energy capacity to the national grid, strengthening long-term energy security while serving as a key asset in Europe's green transition, advancing regional decarbonization. The project also validates its bankability, demonstrating that large-scale solar projects in Southeastern Europe align with international environmental and social sustainability standards.
The project is expected to generate over 365 GWh of electricity annually, equivalent to reducing annual CO2 emissions by approximately 182,000 tons. Construction is planned to commence in the third quarter of 2026, with a target of becoming operational in the first quarter of 2028.
