The MoU focuses on knowledge exchange and capacity building in areas such as nuclear regulation and safety, infrastructure and policy design, technological advancement, and waste management, while also strengthening ties between African organizations and NEA member states. This collaboration will guide the continued advancement of the NEA's "Journey Together" initiative, launched in 2024, across Africa, helping African countries improve people's livelihoods, ensure energy security, and achieve sustainable development goals through nuclear technology. AFCONE, as an institution under the AU, is responsible for promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology and overseeing the fulfillment of non-proliferation obligations.
William D. Magwood IV, Director-General of the NEA, stated: As several African countries explore nuclear energy development, this partnership establishes a crucial platform to promote informed, fact-based decision-making and shared progress. The challenges these countries face are similar to those faced by many NEA member states. By working together, we can foster economic development and skills enhancement across the African continent.
