Wedoany.com Report on Mar 7th, British padlock manufacturer Squire has announced plans to significantly reduce plastic waste across its product range, including phasing out non-recyclable materials. The company stated that its plastic packaging imports will be reduced to 857 kg in 2025, a 75% decrease from the 3,364 kg recorded in 2024.

Squire has transitioned to packaging formats that use less plastic, replacing blister packs with boxed and cardboard alternatives wherever possible. This move aims to comply with UK packaging regulations, such as the Extended Producer Responsibility framework, by reducing unnecessary plastic and increasing the use of recyclable materials.
The company is also working with manufacturing partners to ensure packaging materials are recyclable and actively exploring alternative solutions to balance environmental responsibility, product integrity, and retail compliance. This initiative is part of Squire's broader sustainability goals to minimize the environmental impact of its operations, products, and packaging.
Amid industry efforts to reduce plastic, Coveris last year launched a cardboard-based MAP tray for the meat, fish, and poultry industries, claiming it reduces plastic by 90% while maintaining recyclability. Graphic Packaging recently introduced the Boardio recyclable cardboard canister as an alternative to plastic, glass, and metal containers, reportedly using over 90% less plastic compared to rigid containers.
