Wedoany.com Report on Mar 16th, Sheffield Forgemasters, the UK's sole manufacturer of large castings and forgings for nuclear power projects, has decided to trial the Quorum Principle methodology to advance its digital transformation program. The Quorum Principle, a collaborative framework, focuses on addressing systemic barriers that may be encountered during manufacturing transformation, enhancing efficiency by integrating functions such as finance, operations, and engineering.

Sheffield Forgemasters, which recently celebrated its 250th anniversary, is now committed to reducing barriers between internal departments by deploying an enterprise-wide digital system to optimize its operational processes. CEO Gary Nutt stated: "The government has invested significant funds to enhance our defense manufacturing capability. As part of the recapitalization, we are developing an Enterprise Resource Planning strategy and a Smart Manufacturing strategy. The recapitalization plan is crucial, and trialing the Quorum Principle methodology aims to support the transformation of our digital assets."
Since its acquisition by the UK Ministry of Defence in 2021, Sheffield Forgemasters has initiated a comprehensive modernization program to support its defense project manufacturing efforts. The digital transformation workflow covers multiple areas including Enterprise Resource Planning, Manufacturing Execution Systems, Product Lifecycle Management, and Smart Factories.
The Quorum Principle, founded by Industry 4.0 thought leader John Robinson, aims to address a systemic challenge in global manufacturing: the existence of barriers within manufacturers between strategy, information technology, operational technology, engineering, and operational excellence, coupled with insufficient collaboration among external solution providers. Robinson noted: "The systemic challenge doesn't exist within a single company; it spans multiple companies. The entire supply chain is out of sync because the organizations that make up the supply chain operate in silos and cannot access each other's data."
Under the new methodology, Sheffield Forgemasters is establishing a Centre of Excellence, bringing together internal stakeholders to collaboratively advance the digital transformation program. Robinson added: "Manufacturing is a complex system; no single supplier can provide a complete solution." The methodology is designed to operate across an ecosystem of solution providers, ranging from startups to multinational suppliers, system integrators, and consulting firms.
