Wedoany.com Report on Mar 16th, Governor Uba Sani of Nigeria's Kaduna State announced on Thursday the launch of a major livestock support program aimed at developing the state into an agricultural and livestock hub in the country's north. The program seeks to enhance productivity and value chains by distributing supplies to 5,000 farmers cooperatives across the state.
The distributed supplies include 500 solar-powered freezers equipped with panels, inverters, and batteries; 300 feed milling machines; 3,000 bags of poultry feed; and 200,000 day-old chicks provided to cooperatives in the 23 local government areas. Represented by Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe, Sani emphasized that this initiative is a crucial part of transforming agriculture and strengthening the livestock sector.
"Our goal is to build a Kaduna State that is self-sufficient, supports the nation, and exports to the world," he stated. According to the introduction, 5,000 farmers, organized into cooperatives in groups of ten, will directly benefit from this support program.
The equipment is expected to increase productivity, reduce losses, improve product quality, and expand income opportunities, particularly for women and youth engaged in livestock farming. Sani added that the state government has also rehabilitated abattoirs and slaughter slabs, established veterinary clinics, provided boreholes in pastoral communities, and deployed mobile veterinary teams to enhance animal healthcare.
Government vaccination campaigns have protected over 850,000 cattle, 250,000 sheep and goats, 250,000 poultry, and 5,000 dogs from transboundary diseases. The livestock program complements the Tallafin Noma initiative, which has already supported 69,000 crop farmers with seeds, fertilizers, and mechanization tools.
Sani noted that ongoing rural road construction and agricultural projects will further improve farm-to-market transportation and strengthen the state's agricultural economy. He urged beneficiaries to use the equipment responsibly to expand productivity and improve livelihoods.
