Wedoany.com Report on Mar 18th, The UK's National Composites Centre (NCC) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), with plans to launch a new carbon fiber research and development facility in Bristol in the second half of 2026. This initiative aims to enhance the UK's domestic R&D capabilities in carbon fiber materials, reduce reliance on external supply chains, and support the development of industries such as aerospace, defense, and clean energy.
As part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, NCC and CPI will combine their expertise in polymer chemistry, process technology, and materials manufacturing, covering the entire lifecycle from R&D to commercialization. This collaboration is designed to accelerate the translation of innovative research from UK universities and pilot projects into practical applications, providing manufacturers with a more efficient path from the laboratory to the production line.
The initial focus of the partnership is on carbon fiber R&D, an area where the UK currently lacks complete domestic production capabilities for this critical material. By building independent innovation capacity, the collaboration is expected to generate new intellectual property, strengthen supply chain stability, and reduce dependence on overseas resources. This work is integrated into the UK government's industrial strategy and advanced manufacturing plans and is anticipated to drive improvements in product performance, cost, and sustainability.
NCC's carbon fiber R&D facility will be equipped with two manufacturing development lines for testing and validating new carbon fiber formulations and process technologies, while also mitigating scaling risks. Concurrently, CPI will establish complementary R&D capabilities to optimize the process chemistry and key component formulations for core carbon fiber raw materials. The outcomes will be directly supplied for use in NCC's new facility.
