This is part of the institutional reform of the geological exploration system in Fujian Province. As the province's only professional marine geological team, the brigade will undertake responsibilities such as comprehensive geological surveys of coastal zones and oceans, exploration of marine strategic resources, marine ecological protection and restoration, geological surveys for marine-related engineering projects, and marine geological carbon sinks. It will provide geological technical support for Fujian's marine economy.

The institutional reform of Fujian's geological exploration system commenced in March 2024. It aims to merge the former Fujian Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Exploration and Development and the former Fujian Provincial Coalfield Geology Bureau, establishing the Fujian Provincial Geology Bureau and the Fujian Provincial Institute of Geological Sciences. Additionally, it involves integrating and establishing 12 public institutions and the Fujian Provincial Geology Investment Group Co., Ltd., forming a new structure of "one bureau, one institute, one group." Before the unveiling of the Marine (Island) Geological Brigade, 11 public institutions had already successively unveiled their plaques, indicating that the reform has achieved phased progress.

In the future, geological work in Fujian Province will focus on its primary responsibilities of ensuring energy and resource security, serving ecological civilization construction, and supporting natural resource management. It will concentrate on areas such as geological prospecting, geological disaster prevention and control, marine geology, ecological geology, and digital and intelligent geology, striving to build a distinctive provincial-level geological team.
