en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 30th, Toshiba Corporation of Japan and LQUOM Inc. recently signed a joint research agreement to jointly explore the use of quantum repeater technology to extend the transmission distance of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). The project is scheduled to run from March 2026 to March 2027, focusing on evaluating the technical feasibility of integrating Toshiba's QKD system with LQUOM's quantum repeater architecture. This collaboration aims to break through the current transmission distance limitations of fiber-optic quantum communication, laying the foundation for building large-scale quantum networks and the future quantum internet.

The research will specifically analyze the optimal combination of QKD protocols and repeater design from performance and implementation perspectives. Toshiba is responsible for researching QKD architecture and protocols, and the company has accumulated extensive experience in the field of high-speed key distribution since 1999. LQUOM is a startup originating from Yokohama National University, focusing on quantum entanglement-based repeater system architecture. These quantum repeaters are designed for long-distance transmission of quantum states, avoiding signal degradation caused by standard fiber optic losses and enabling secure communication without trusted nodes.

This collaboration builds upon Toshiba's investment in LQUOM through its corporate venture capital division in 2023. By integrating Toshiba's commercialized QKD technology with LQUOM's expertise in entanglement sources and repeater nodes, the project aims to provide technical support for next-generation information infrastructure. The research results are expected to promote the application of quantum-secure communication in fields such as healthcare, finance, and energy, where secure transmission between long-distance data centers is a key requirement.
