US IonQ Invests $15 Million with EPB to Establish Quantum Communication Research Center
en.Wedoany.com Reported - IonQ and EPB announced the establishment of the Tennessee Quantum Communication Research Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which they describe as the first dedicated research facility of its kind directly connected to a working network. The center will be staffed by IonQ scientists, with EPB providing the operational fiber environment and serving as the primary commercialization partner, aiming to translate laboratory work into applications for the public and private sectors in the Tennessee Valley region.

Quantum devices operate normally under controlled laboratory conditions, but their performance may change once connected to real-world infrastructure that carries routine operational constraints, maintenance schedules, physical distances, and competing demands. The center provides IonQ with a venue to demonstrate actual component performance outside a carefully isolated demonstration environment—a capability quantum vendors typically need before buyers seriously consider procurement.
The project expands a partnership announced in April 2025, when EPB agreed to gain access to IonQ's Forte Enterprise system as part of a $22 million initiative aimed at positioning Chattanooga as a hub for commercial quantum computing and networking. The earlier deal focused on computing power, application development, workforce training, and utility-related use cases. The new center goes further into the communications layer, adding quantum memory research and real-network testing rather than replacing the original deployment.
Quantum memory is designed to store and process quantum information transmitted over fiber-optic links. In the architecture IonQ is pursuing, such memory will help quantum systems at different locations exchange information over longer distances and ultimately connect computing resources with end users. This concept underpins the often-discussed quantum internet, although that phrase still encompasses more ambition than deployable products. IonQ has not announced commercial network services, customer contracts, or production timelines; the center is a corporate-funded R&D site.
