en.Wedoany.com Reported - Trelleborg Sealing Solutions recently introduced two low-carbon EPDM rubber grades, reducing the product carbon footprint by up to 55%, marking a key step towards improving environmental impact in the industrial polymer sector.
The series includes materials with Shore A hardness of 70 and 80, maintaining performance comparable to traditional EPDM. Project Manager Dr. Jekaterina Miller stated, "These low-carbon EPDM rubbers are made from non-fossil-based virgin polymers, with raw materials sourced from renewable components such as used cooking oil, straw, forestry residues, and tall oil.
"Based on circular raw materials, these materials provide an environmentally friendly alternative, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of customer products. Using recognized calculation methods, molded products made from the Shore A hardness 70 and 80 materials can achieve carbon footprint reductions of up to 33% and 55%, respectively."
The specific grades are E7T11 with Shore A hardness 70 and E8T12 with Shore A hardness 80, suitable for producing O-rings, gaskets, and custom-engineered products. Application areas cover automotive, processing, manufacturing, automation, energy, agriculture, as well as construction and mining equipment.
These EPDM rubber seals are used in engines, doors, pumps, valves, pipe connectors, household appliances, cylinders, solar panels, ship hatches, and HVAC systems. Developed in collaboration with Arlanxeo, the materials achieve a carbon footprint reduction of 51% to 61% in their compounded form.
Arlanxeo's bio-circular EPDM grades are ISCC PLUS certified and use a mass balance approach to trace raw materials. Trelleborg compounds them with recycled carbon black and has collaborated with Sphera Solutions to validate the carbon footprint calculation methodology, which is currently undergoing certification by the DEKRA organization.
