en.Wedoany.com Reported - United Utilities is delivering the refurbishment of the Crewe Sewage Treatment Plant in Cheshire through its "Enterprise Programme," where Costain applied its industrial cooling expertise to complete the first phase of the project 12 months ahead of schedule. The Enterprise Programme brings together United Utilities, Costain, and six other design and construction partners to deliver a major package of projects worth £2.5 billion.

Crewe Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade

Costain supported the refurbishment of two nitrifying trickling filter systems at the Crewe Sewage Treatment Plant, involving the installation of new polypropylene packing media. Manufactured and assembled by Costain, this packing media acts as a filter, using nitrifying bacteria to remove ammonia from the water and convert it into nitrate. The method of using packing media as a filter is similar to practices in industrial cooling, where packing media is installed in cooling towers to provide a large surface area, enabling hot water and cold air to interact effectively and promote the evaporative cooling process.

Costain's understanding of the conditions at the Crewe Sewage Treatment Plant and the application of industrial cooling technology means the phased refurbishment is expected to continue throughout the year. Costain is also working with local supply chain partners to recycle used media to minimize the environmental impact on the sewage treatment process.

Mark Blackham, Head of Industrial Cooling at Costain, said: "This is the first time we have applied industrial cooling technology to a water utility company, leveraging our decades of experience and complex packing media assembly processes. The implementation of this technology has enabled us to carry out vital upgrades to sewage infrastructure, thereby improving the water quality of surrounding rivers and benefiting local wildlife. We look forward to exploring subsequent opportunities to apply this technology to projects in the water sector."

Richard Helm, Project Director at Costain, said: "We maintain an excellent working relationship with United Utilities as a trusted partner. This trust is partly built on our ability to apply innovative solutions to achieve safe and efficient sewage treatment. By drawing on the advanced practices and capabilities of colleagues in the energy sector, we were able to deliver critical upgrades for United Utilities ahead of schedule."

Tony Slater, Enterprise Director at United Utilities, said: "Through our Enterprise Programme, we collaborate with delivery partners who have a proven track record of providing best-in-class water infrastructure solutions, supporting our ambitious plan to transform infrastructure and services in the Northwest." Tony Slater added: "We were impressed by the innovative solutions Costain brought to this complex project. The upgrades at Crewe will enhance treatment performance and help the site become more resilient as demand grows."

The upgrade of the Crewe Sewage Treatment Plant will help improve the health of the nearby River Weaver and prepare for future needs as the local population grows. This sewage treatment project is part of United Utilities' £13 billion "Great North West Upgrade Plan," which will deliver new infrastructure, improve water quality, replace aging water pipes, and reduce leakage through to 2030.
