en.Wedoany.com Reported - Eurelectric, the European electricity industry association, recently launched a strategic initiative aimed at uniting the energy and digital sectors to promote the sustainable growth of European data centers and artificial intelligence.

Energy and digital sectors join forces to drive European data center development

The initiative was unveiled at the "Power Summit 2026" in Helsinki. Named the "Twin Transition Commitments," it aims to deepen collaboration between key players in the electricity and digital sectors to assess trends, policies, and market factors, facilitating the efficient deployment of AI.

According to Eurelectric's statement, the initiative will analyze the future demand and flexibility of data centers, as well as how the power system can respond to the rapid growth of European data centers. It will also promote secure and sustainable power supply solutions, including leveraging AI and partnerships between utility companies and major tech firms.

The initiative will examine key factors such as interconnection frameworks, innovative procurement models, and coordinated planning of energy and digital infrastructure. The findings will be compiled into a comprehensive report, to be published in 2027, offering practical recommendations for the sustainable expansion of AI and data centers in Europe.

Eurelectric stated that the rapid adoption of AI is transforming electricity demand and power system operations, making it essential to align the expansion of artificial infrastructure with the readiness of the power system. AI is generating significant electricity demand, with data centers expected to account for 28% of Europe's electricity demand growth by 2030.

On the other hand, AI is becoming a key factor in optimizing power system management, widely applied to improve grid efficiency, consumption forecasting, or asset performance. Kristian Ruby, Secretary General of Eurelectric, said in a statement that accelerating the application of AI technology will bring numerous benefits to the energy industry, including improved operational efficiency and increased flexibility in a more decentralized energy system.

Teresa Ribera, the Spanish Executive Vice President of the European Commission responsible for the clean, fair, and competitive transition, is expected to attend the "Power Summit 2026" forum in Helsinki this Thursday.
