en.Wedoany.com Reported - The NARA Climate Community Biochar Project in Turkana County, Kenya, has issued, verified, and sold its first batch of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits.

This project is the world's first refugee-led carbon initiative, operating in the Kakuma and Kerio communities. It aims to process an invasive shrub known as Prosopis juliflora and produce biochar from it.
The project has generated 144 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) to date. The corresponding carbon credits have been verified on the Carbon Standards International (CSI) registry and issued as C-Sinks. The first batch of credits has been purchased by CDR buyers.
The project was jointly developed by NARA Climate, Criou Energy Ltd., and Planboo. It utilizes an integrated Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) technology developed by Planboo, which captures key data at every step from biomass collection to field application of biochar to track carbon removal.
The biochar product helps balance soil pH and improve water retention capacity, addressing the region's saline soil issues and enhancing soil nutrient storage conditions. In terms of co-benefits, the project provides approximately 123 jobs across five refugee-led community cooperatives in the Kakuma and Kerio communities, with about 50% of employees being women and refugees. Land cleared of invasive shrubs is returned to the communities for agricultural use, and cooperative products are sold to the Kakuma refugee camp and local markets.
