en.Wedoany.com Reported - A new nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) for the Russian Navy recently had its keel laid, built by Sevmash, a subsidiary of Russia's state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) in Severodvinsk.

Named "Murmansk," this submarine belongs to the Yasen-M class (Project 885M series). Like its sister ships, it measures 130 meters in length, 13 meters in hull diameter, has a maximum rated diving depth of 658 meters, a top underwater speed of 35 knots, and can accommodate 64 crew members. The "Murmansk" is armed with torpedoes and cruise missiles, including the Zircon hypersonic missile. Its sister ship "Perm" will become Russia's first nuclear-powered attack submarine equipped with Zircon missiles upon entering service.

The design work was carried out by USC's Malakhit Marine Engineering Bureau, which is responsible for designing the sole Project 885 submarine and 11 Project 885M submarines, including the "Murmansk." These new submarines will replace the Oscar-class (Project 949) and Akula-class (Project 971) submarines that have been in service with the Russian Navy since the 1980s.
