Japanese companies have long been involved in major industrial projects in Turkmenistan. Among them, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Sojitz Corporation participated in the construction of a gas-to-gasoline plant in Ahal Province, one of the country's flagship natural gas processing projects. Japanese companies have also been involved in petrochemical and fertilizer projects implemented jointly with Turkmen state-owned enterprises.

Bilateral economic cooperation gained new momentum during the visit of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to Japan in April 2025. During the visit, organizations from Turkmenistan and Japan signed a package of agreements and memorandums of understanding covering energy, gas chemistry, transportation, environmental technology, and industrial cooperation. According to official reports, the documents signed during the visit were valued at over $1 billion, highlighting Japan's status as one of Turkmenistan's key technology and industrial partners in Asia.

In March of this year, Turkmenistan's Ambassador to Japan, Atadurdy Bayramov, and Japan's Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ayano Kunimitsu, reviewed the implementation of bilateral agreements and identified strategic areas for future cooperation, emphasizing the progress achieved through recent high-level visits. The Turkmen delegation also expressed its willingness to host Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for a visit at a mutually convenient time.
