Wedoany.com Report-Mar 26, The Greater Bay Area Sports Centre in Guangdong, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects’ (ZHA), is due for completion in June ahead of China’s National Games in November.

Set in a 70ha park, it will have a 60,000-seat stadium, a 20,000-seat venue for basketball and indoor events, and a 4,000-capacity aquatics centre with a 50m swimming pool and diving well.

It will also have athletes’ accommodation, outdoor training pitches, running tracks and space for local sport programmes.

It will host national and international sporting events and cultural performances.

It’s on Line 18 of the Guangzhou Metro at the southern end of Guangzhou’s Nansha District on the western bank of the Pearl River near the new Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge.

ZHA said the stadium’s seating bowl can be adjusted to optimise viewing for specific events.

Crews are in the final stages of interior finishing and landscaping.

The stadium’s fluid design is inspired by the traditional sailing ships used on the Pearl River during the Song Dynasty approximately a thousand years ago.

The surrounding parkland acts as natural flood protection in Guangdong’s subtropical monsoon climate.

The Nansha District Bureau of Culture & Sports commissioned ZHA for the design.
