en.Wedoany.com Reported - Italy's railway safety regulator, ANSFISA (Italian National Railway Safety Agency), has issued authorization allowing hydrogen trains to enter trial operation on the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line in the Lombardy region.

This project is Italy's first hydrogen train operation project and one of the larger-scale regional hydrogen railway deployments in Europe. The project covers 14 Alstom hydrogen trains, which will replace the current diesel fleet operating on this non-electrified line.

The H2iseO project is promoted by FNM, FERROVIENORD, and Trenord, with support from the Lombardy region. The project also includes hydrogen production and distribution facilities, station upgrades, and the depot and maintenance infrastructure required for the new trains.

The authorization process began in 2022, involving FNM, FERROVIENORD, Trenord, Alstom, ANSFISA, certification bodies, conformity assessment organizations, risk assessment agencies, research institutions, and maintenance entities. This process addressed the introduction of hydrogen-powered rolling stock within Italy's railway safety and approval framework.

Static acceptance tests have been conducted in Rovato for the first seven trains delivered under PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) funding. These tests will continue over the coming months, with an additional train entering the same process in the second half of 2026.

Dynamic acceptance tests will be conducted for each train on the Rovato and Brescia-Edolo lines. Subsequently, the fleet will undergo further trial runs under various simulated commercial operating conditions.

Commercial operation still requires the completion of the experimental operation period mandated by the trial operation authorization.
