en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat is developing a regional artificial intelligence strategy and regulatory framework aimed at guiding member states in the responsible and inclusive adoption of AI technologies, strengthening ethical governance, and harmonizing relevant standards.

Malawi's Ministry of Information and Communication Technology stated that participation in formulating the regional AI policy is part of the region's efforts to drive digital transformation, economic growth, and regional integration. Minister Shadric Namalomba is attending the SADC Ministerial Meeting in Zimbabwe, where digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and climate-resilient infrastructure are being discussed as drivers of regional integration and economic growth.

Participants also reviewed progress in AI governance in the region. Some member states, including Malawi, have completed the UNESCO AI Readiness Assessment, while the SADC Secretariat continues to advance the development of the regional framework.

The Ministry stated that Malawi will continue to participate in regional digital policy processes, supporting AI governance and innovation mechanisms for sustainable development and inclusive growth. Cooperation among SADC member states is crucial to ensuring that emerging technologies drive job creation, economic transformation, and regional competitiveness, while ensuring that no country in Southern Africa is left behind in the adoption of AI and digital innovation. Policy coordination will support more inclusive regional digital transformation across sectors such as agriculture, health, education, and finance.
