en.Wedoany.com Reported - Kalina Distributed Power, the Canadian subsidiary of Australia's Kalina Power, has withdrawn its proposal for the Lone Pine Energy Centre project. The project originally planned to build a data center and supporting gas-fired power generation facilities near the city of Airdrie, Alberta, Canada.

Proposed Kalina Data Center in Airdrie, Canada

The news was disclosed during a meeting of the Rocky View County Council on June 9. Kalina's withdrawal notice is dated April 24, 2026. The project involved land located west of the intersection of Township Road 280 and Highway 791, and planned to build a data center along with a 200 MW gas-fired power generation project.

In its withdrawal notice, Kalina stated that community opposition to the proposal was a key factor in this decision. The company said via email: "As an Alberta-based company committed to responsible power development, we engaged with the community and considered their feedback. As a result, we are no longer advancing the proposal to develop the project at the above-mentioned site. We have withdrawn the project from the current land use rezoning pre-application process and will engage in further discussions with the county, including relocating the project."

Airdrie is located approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Calgary, Alberta's largest city. Kalina stated that it is developing a portfolio of approximately 2 GW of energy projects to power data centers. These data centers will utilize "200 MW Combined Cycle (CC) gas-fired power plants equipped with optional Carbon Capture and Sequestration." All related projects are located in Alberta.

Additionally, Kalina has received approval to build and operate a 64 MW, 17-acre gas-fired power plant in the Saddle Hills region, near the border between Alberta and British Columbia. In February 2025, the company also partnered with artificial intelligence data center developer Crusoe to develop AI data centers powered by natural gas-fired power plants in the province.
