Sanctuary Scotland commemorates delivery of 64 homes in Greenock

The housing project includes one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and four-bedroom apartments and houses to meet housing needs in the Inverclyde area. The project received a £6.9 million grant from the Scottish Government and was built by Sanctuary Housing Association's in-house construction workers.

The site includes family homes, two wheelchair-accessible apartments, and two apartments designed for bariatric use. The project also features parking spaces, electric vehicle charging facilities, and access to Greenock town centre, local amenities, and transport links.

Representatives from Sanctuary Scotland, Inverclyde Council, and the local community attended the project handover ceremony. The widow and family of Greenock boxer George Dougan also participated in the event, with George Dougan Place within the development named in his honour.

Gillian Lavety, Development Director at Sanctuary Scotland, said she was delighted to celebrate the delivery of these 64 new homes on Duncan Street and welcome residents. She noted that the project has redeveloped a former brownfield site, creating much-needed affordable housing for residents and families in Greenock. The mix of home types, particularly family homes and apartments designed for accessibility, helps meet a wide range of local needs. She also mentioned that George Dougan Place has become part of the project, providing a lasting tribute to this important local figure and strengthening the connection between the new homes and Greenock's heritage.

Mrs Dougan, George Dougan's widow, said having a street named after her late husband George was a great honour. She noted that George dedicated much of his life to boxing and helping young people in the community, and she felt privileged to formally attend the home handover ceremony and see his name recognised.

Councillor Michael McCormick, Inverclyde Council's Convener of Environment and Regeneration, said high-quality, affordable housing is very important, and he was pleased that partner Sanctuary Housing Association has achieved this at a prominent location in the centre of Greenock. The project is a key part of the council's five-year strategic housing delivery plan for Inverclyde and is expected to act as a catalyst for further development in the area, with active discussions underway with several developers on this goal.
