en.Wedoany.com Reported - Bengaluru-based Nova Control Technologix (a subsidiary of e2E Rail) has partnered with Tata Elxsi to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into signaling systems and carriage equipment, developing predictive systems capable of identifying potential faults. The company plans to invest 1 billion rupees over the next two to three years in advanced signaling and AI-enabled carriage technology, with Tata Elxsi providing expertise in cybersecurity and data protection. The two parties aim to shift from reactive maintenance to continuous self-monitoring and early fault prediction.

AI will transform railway safety systems

Currently, most of Indian Railways' network still relies on manual inspection and maintenance, even with the introduction of automatic train protection systems. Industry estimates show that Indian Railways' existing asset maintenance budget accounts for 65% to 70% of total maintenance expenditure. Experts believe that broader adoption of AI-driven predictive maintenance could reduce this share to below 50%. Indian Railways spends approximately 1 trillion rupees annually on safety and maintenance. These companies believe that AI can enable systems to achieve self-diagnostic capabilities and greater autonomy by identifying patterns, predicting faults, and recommending corrective actions, thereby improving asset availability and punctuality.

Additionally, the two parties are developing digital twin technology to simulate and validate AI models before deployment across Indian Railways' 132,000-kilometer network. Tata Elxsi integrates AI into the architecture from the design phase, aiming to create modular, scalable, and adaptable platforms that support advanced algorithms for safety decision-making and predictive maintenance.
