en.Wedoany.com Reported - Corning, the specialty glass and fiber optic manufacturer, is positioning the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers as a core strategy to accelerate its business growth in India. Sudhir Pillai, Managing Director and President for India, Middle East, and Africa at Corning, stated that AI data centers require approximately ten times more fiber than hyperscale data centers, driving global demand for thinner fibers and higher-density cables.
Pillai noted that while fiber demand in AI data centers surges, conduit sizes, rack space, and in most cases, real estate footprints have not increased, creating a challenge. In response, Corning has developed a fiber that is 40% thinner, enabling it to be packed into higher-density cables, thereby increasing fiber capacity and connectivity without expanding the physical footprint. He described data centers as "fiber gluttons" and revealed that the company had been positioning itself around the three pillars of "thinner fiber, higher-density cables, and more efficient connectors" even before the AI wave emerged—initiatives that are now driving Corning's growth in data centers globally.
In February of this year, Corning broke ground on a new fiber optic connectivity manufacturing plant in Pune, India. Located adjacent to the company's fiber plant that has been operational since 2012, the new facility will focus on producing fiber optic connectivity products specifically for hyperscale and AI data centers. Pillai stated that the new plant is scheduled to begin production in the fourth quarter of this year, at which point the site will have complete manufacturing capabilities from fiber to connectors. During the construction phase, the company has already observed growing demand in the Indian market and is closely monitoring the situation to determine whether to expand the plant's scale.
Pillai emphasized the company's strategic focus in the global data center sector: scale and installation speed, size, sustainability, and simplification. He noted that this strategy applies equally as investments in India's data center sector increase. His current top priority is to drive the operational launch of the new Pune plant, a cover glass finishing facility in Tamil Nadu established in partnership with Optiemus Infracom, and a glass tube plant in Hyderabad set up in collaboration with SGD Pharma. The cover glass finishing facility is currently in the final stages of quality and compliance certification required by OEMs.
Additionally, Pillai stated that he is closely monitoring India's evolving display and semiconductor ecosystems. He noted that in the display sector, Corning is a manufacturer of glass substrates, while in the semiconductor sector, the company is focusing on any optics-related business that supports the ecosystem. He believes the display segment is crucial for India and called for attention to attracting "cornerstone component companies," such as chemical or adhesive firms, to further advance the development of related industries in India.
