en.Wedoany.com Reported - Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), the Portuguese railway infrastructure company, has completed the installation of 20 kilometers of track equipped with modern electronic signaling systems in the Lisbon metropolitan area, thereby achieving the new targets set by the European Union for the digitalization of railway transport ahead of schedule.

This investment covers key sections and stations of the Portuguese railway network, including the Linha de Cintura (Ring Line) in the Lisbon metropolitan area and the Linha do Norte (Northern Line) connecting Lisbon to Porto. Stations such as Campolide, Oriente, Alverca, and Azambuja have also been equipped with new control and signaling technologies.

IP noted that this progress has enabled it to surpass one of the key targets for railway transport digitalization set by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), enhancing network modernization and improving system safety and interoperability.

To confirm the project's progress, representatives from Recuperar Portugal, the government agency overseeing NRRP implementation, along with IP management and technical teams, inspected the stations on the two aforementioned lines. The formal signing of the installation completion report marks the conclusion of the implementation phase for the new signaling infrastructure and confirms this milestone.

This modernization project directly serves the NRRP's specific objectives for railway transport digitalization. In addition to this track signaling upgrade, Portugal has deployed ETCS/STM systems on rolling stock, thereby achieving or even surpassing multiple technical indicators.

To date, IP has received a total of €478 million in European funding through the NRRP, accounting for the majority of its infrastructure project allocations. These investments aim to modernize the railway network, improve regional connectivity, promote cross-border links, and enhance sustainable transport infrastructure. Portuguese authorities stated that these projects will help build a safer, more efficient railway network fully interoperable with European standards, laying the foundation for future digital mobility.
