en.Wedoany.com Reported - The UK Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade completed blockade works at Dewsbury and Batley stations between 30 May and 27 June 2025, with both stations receiving platform extensions to accommodate longer trains, along with improved accessibility and passenger facilities.

Batley station will feature a new footbridge, lifts, and extended platforms, with full step-free access expected by late summer 2025. Dewsbury station will benefit from extended platforms and upgraded waiting facilities. These works are part of a multi-year electrification and capacity upgrade project along the 76-mile Pennine corridor between Manchester and York (via Huddersfield and Leeds). Project sponsor Jonathan Hepton confirmed that the team completed construction safely and on schedule despite high temperatures. The next phase will shift focus to Huddersfield station, with work planned over five consecutive weekends in July and August 2025, followed by a 16-day blockade in September.

The upgrade involves Network Rail, operator Northern, and multiple project leaders. Full redevelopment of Batley station is expected to be completed by late summer 2025. Similar projects have faced pressures: in June 2025, a safety incident at an HS2 construction site led to a six-day shutdown for safety reviews; HS2 Ltd also identified approximately £500 million in non-conforming costs on its civil engineering contracts and is seeking renegotiations to save around £2 billion, though the UK National Audit Office has warned of tight timelines for revised agreements. Internationally, the California High-Speed Rail Authority expects major works on the Merced-to-Madera branch to begin in late 2027, with the segment valued at $3.5 billion, while the project still faces an $87 billion funding gap; the Brightline West project has reported cost increases and schedule delays.
