en.Wedoany.com Reported - Huawei has set a licensing fee of $0.50 per consumer device for its Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be) standard essential patents.

Wi-Fi 7

The company stated that this move aims to enhance transparency and predictability in Wi-Fi 7 standard essential patent licensing, and to support industry adoption through fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles. Wi-Fi 7 is a next-generation wireless technology that delivers higher throughput, lower latency, and greater reliability compared to previous standards, making it suitable for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and other bandwidth-intensive emerging applications.

Huawei claims to be a major contributor to the IEEE 802.11 series of wireless standards, possessing one of the largest declared standard essential patent portfolios in the Wi-Fi 7 field, with related technology research and development spanning over a decade. As of the end of 2024, the company's patent licensing agreements cover more than 1.2 billion consumer electronic devices worldwide.

Under the licensing framework, consumer-grade Wi-Fi 7 device manufacturers can obtain licenses through bilateral agreements or recognized patent pools, with all terms adhering to FRAND principles. Huawei joined the Sisvel Wi-Fi 6 patent pool as a founding member in July 2022, participating both as a licensor and licensee. The company stated that it continues to maintain a substantial Wi-Fi 6 patent portfolio, which has been licensed within the industry. Building on this foundation, Huawei joined the Sisvel Wi-Fi Multi-Mode patent pool as a founding member, which provides manufacturers with a single licensing platform covering Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 standard essential patents.

Alan Fan, Huawei's Chief Intellectual Property Officer, stated that the company's licensing program aims to support a cooperative licensing model that balances the interests of patent holders and technology implementers, and to promote the establishment of a transparent and efficient global Wi-Fi licensing framework.
