en.Wedoany.com Reported - Chile's Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel) has released a modification to the technical standards for fixed satellite services, incorporating the W-band (75 to 110 GHz) into operational frequencies to expand competition in satellite services and improve connectivity. Subtel stated that plans to include the V-band (40 to 75 GHz) will be announced in the coming days.

The new regulation adds W-band frequency resources on top of the Ku and Ka bands already used for satellite services. This will expand satellite network capacity, improve data transmission, and enhance satellite connectivity in remote and rural areas or regions with insufficient coverage of terrestrial infrastructure such as fiber optics and 5G.

The measure applies to operators and satellite internet service companies already operating in Chile, such as Starlink and HughesNet, as well as new enterprises that may enter the market in the future. Subtel believes that the updated regulatory framework will attract more investment, promote infrastructure deployment, and accelerate the adoption of new technologies, particularly benefiting rural and remote areas.

Romina Garrido, Undersecretary of Telecommunications at Subtel, stated that the addition of spectrum enables satellite services to operate more efficiently, support greater traffic, and provide users with more stable, higher-speed connections with shorter response times. It also enhances resilience in emergencies or disruptions, complementing Chile's existing telecommunications infrastructure, especially in remote and rural areas.
