en.Wedoany.com Reported - India's Kamarajar Port has set a target year of 2027 for the development of its second container terminal. The project is designed with an annual handling capacity of approximately 2 million TEUs, aiming to enhance the port's throughput and strengthen container handling operations along India's east coast. According to port officials, the second container terminal will be built in two phases, with a total quay length of 900 meters. The project investment is estimated at around INR 43 billion.
Prior to this, the port invited expressions of interest from experienced terminal developers in December 2025. Currently, five Indian and international companies have expressed bidding interest. Industry information indicates that the design capacity of the new terminal represents a significant expansion of the port's existing logistics ecosystem. As of June 2026, Kamarajar Port operates nine berths with a cargo handling capacity of 58.44 million tonnes, having set a record of 48.41 million tonnes of cargo handled in the 2024-25 fiscal year. The port's existing public container terminal has a handling capacity of 800,000 TEUs, which will be increased to 1.4 million TEUs after the completion of the second phase expansion.
Once the new terminal is completed, the port will be able to handle four large mother ships simultaneously, helping to alleviate port congestion and reduce vessel turnaround times. The contract is expected to be formally awarded in February 2027, with construction commencing around August of the same year. The first berth is expected to become operational in 2029, with the second berth to be completed two years later.
