en.Wedoany.com Reported - The excavation of the 2-kilometer-long Polcevera ventilation tunnel has been completed. This tunnel is part of the single contract for the Terzo Valico dei Giovi–Genoa Junction project in Italy.

The project is being carried out by the general contractor led by Webuild on behalf of RFI (part of the FS Italiane Group), with support from FS Engineering (also part of the FS Italiane Group), and under the supervision of the government's Special Commissioner, Calogero Mauceri.

The tunnel excavation was carried out by COSSI Costruzioni (part of the Webuild Group), with the team working simultaneously on four fronts. This approach optimized the schedule while ensuring the highest operational and safety standards. The construction used conventional excavation methods.

The tunnel work began at the end of October 2024, facing significant technical and logistical challenges. The first excavation front had to pass beneath the Genoa-Milan railway line, with excavation taking place just 18 meters below the tracks, while the railway remained operational without any interruptions or impacts.

To optimize the timeline, two additional excavation fronts were opened from February 2025, working simultaneously in opposite directions along the tunnel axis. At the same time, a fourth front focused on widening the tunnel cross-section and constructing underground chambers, which will house the facilities for the future ventilation system.

The single contract for the Terzo Valico dei Giovi–Genoa Junction is part of the Rhine-Alpine corridor of the European Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), one of the busiest routes in Europe.
